Why do New Year’s resolutions fail? Discover the neuroscience of making change stick and how hypnosis helps you finally become the person who does it.
This is the time of year I get super busy. With every New Year comes a fresh round of people who are curious about how hypnosis can help them create some kind of change in their lives.
For most it’s some kind of lifestyle change, like weight loss, or quitting an unhealthy habit like smoking. For others it’s to let go of something from the past, or to build the confidence and courage to take on new opportunities in life.
But for everyone who comes to me seeking hypnotherapy as a New Year’s resolution solution, the real goal underneath is the same: You want to create some kind of positive change in your life that you believe will bring you more happiness, health, and fulfillment.
And what better time of year to make a new start than the fresh New Year? Psychologically, it’s like turning the page as we add 1 to the calendar year, a chance to reset. Many around us are making big promises to themselves, so the air is thick with motivation.
There’s a pretty big problem though: Most people don’t actually know how to make these kinds of changes stick.
And this? This is why people come see me.
There’s a solid reason for feeling it’s hard to stick to New Year’s resolutions, despite your sincere motivation to do it. And this is because, when you decide to make a change, you’re doing this with logic. You tell yourself that it’s better for you to stop the old and start something new. And of course, you have every intention of following through…
But these kinds of decisions are made with the conscious, thinking, willful mind.
The problem is your behavior is actually driven by your subconscious mind – those well-worn, ingrained patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting that you’ve learned without even realizing it.
It’s kind of like trying to steer an old van with broken power steering. You might be able to muscle your way to where you’re trying to go, but it’s going to be a fight the whole way. And when your metaphorical arms get sore trying to keep you on track, you wind up blaming yourself when you let go of the wheel and relapse.
And this is often the point where folks realize it’s really tough to try to do this on their own, so they seek out my help with hypnosis.
Your old “neural pathways” (that broken steering wheel) will stay active until the new pattern of identity underneath develops fully, especially when you’re under some kind of stress and life gets in the way.
With any New Year’s resolution, you will probably fall off the wagon at some point…
But creating change doesn’t even require you to behave perfectly! In fact, you might sigh with relief to learn that temporary relapse is actually proven to be part of that learning curve. Making a change in your life is a skill, like learning how to ride a bike – before you’re able to balance on the damn thing, you fall off a bunch of times. It takes a process of repetition and learning.
Ultimately, success isn’t about “never falling off.” Falling off is just a natural part of it – no shame in that. Success is about how quickly you get back on track, and the attitude you embody along the way. This is the real secret skill – and it’s one that hypnosis shines in its ability to help you develop.
Sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions isn’t just about changing a behavior or a habit. It’s about working with what’s underneath the pattern and mentally and emotionally rehearsing new reactions when old triggers come up. It’s about getting your mind into “curious learning mode” so that you loosen the internal resistance to change, which makes it feel less like a threat and more like an inevitability.
This is exactly the stuff that hypnosis will help you do.
But what is hypnosis exactly? I like to think of it as a natural state of focused attention. More specifically, hypnotherapy is a step-by-step process of shifting your awareness away from all the ways you failed in the past, and onto the path forward with confidence.
Basically, my job as a hypnotist is to teach you HOW to change those patterns on the subconscious level so that they stop preventing you from moving forward in your life.
What if you could approach your resolutions this year in a new way – where you realize just how easy it is to get back on track and stay focused on your goal? Not because you’re muscling your way through it but because you’ve addressed the patterns underneath that were driving your old behaviors in the first place.
It’s common for people to ask me if hypnosis will work for them, and most often it’s because they’re worried that they’re just too far down the road of a “bad habit” to imagine life being any different, or they’re afraid of the idea of “giving up control.”
That’s exactly what hypnosis helps with – to put you back in control of the patterns driving the behavior that kept you going in circles in the past, and to finally realize you’re capable of successfully creating change.
Is every one of my clients successful? The truth is, no, not everyone is…
But the ones who see the most success with hypnosis are those who are ready to welcome the inner identity journey of transformation, which ultimately is actually the thing that makes the change permanently visible from the outside. They come into working with me with the understanding that change is a process, and they’re willing to accept my help in making that process easier.
I like to think of hypnosis as helping you finally see yourself as the main character who tackles the inner challenges and becomes the hero of your own story, with the resilience to see it through.
Some of my clients notice huge shifts in just one session. Others take more repetition. Either way, it’s up to you to decide that this is the journey you want to take.
You can try to follow through on your New Year’s resolutions with sheer willpower alone, and you may find yourself successful. Plenty of people do! But have you ever noticed how, when something shifts inside of you – and I mean emotionally, deep in your core, even spiritually – change can happen in almost an instant?
There’s surface-level change. Then there’s identity-level change.
The kind that means less internal battling. Less self-sabotage. Less waffling and second-guessing. The kind that makes new behaviors feel like just a natural part of who you are over time.
As your hypnotist, that’s my aim. I want you to have that deep, lasting, permanent shift inside. Without that eternal struggle, without shaming yourself, and without the old pain of try-fail. In fact, what if achieving your New Year’s resolution could be meaningful and fulfilling – and maybe even fun?
Changing something this year doesn’t require perfection, and relapse into old patterns doesn’t mean failure. It’s about embodying a new inner identity as the person who just “does the thing” and getting back on track quickly when life happens.
Hypnosis is for you, if you’re ready for real inner transformation.
Even if you’ve tried before and “fallen off” your resolutions. Even if you’re an overthinker or worrier. Even if you’ve given up on yourself in the past. And it’s especially for you if you’re tired of starting over, and you’re ready for sustainable change – not just on the behavior level but to take the journey to embody the “new you” in the New Year.
People come to me for all kinds of reasons this time of year: lose weight and create healthy habits, quit smoking or vaping, build self-esteem and confidence, reduce stress and worry, get over relationships and move on, sleep better, feel motivated, and so many other things.
The question is: What do YOU want to accomplish this year?
