Have you ever noticed how one negative thought can kind of hijack your entire day?
Maybe it’s something small that just gets stuck in your head, like a bad pop song. Or maybe it’s something major that you can’t stop ruminating on or trying to figure out.
There’s a protective part of your brain that can start doing this automatically.
And I’m going to show you how to change it.
In order to understand how to stop negative thoughts from taking over your brain, it’s really important to understand why this is happening in the first place.
There’s a system in your brain called the reticular activating system, or RAS, that helps determine what gets your attention and what gets filtered into the background.
You can read more about that in my article on Your Brain’s Hidden Algorithm and How to Change It.
But briefly, it’s part of why you suddenly notice all the other cars on the road that are exactly like yours, or why you start noticing somebody else wearing the same pair of shoes you just bought.
Your brain is subconsciously constantly sorting through tons of information and deciding what’s relevant enough for you to consciously notice.
And your brain loves familiarity.
It’s also why you don’t have to consciously think through every little step of tying your shoes every time you sit down to tie them, or consciously think through driving every time you get behind the wheel.
You already know the pattern.
So what does this have to do with negative thoughts?
Your brain can do something similar with the thought patterns you repeatedly pay attention to.
If you’ve been conditioned to expect the worst, anticipate the negative thing, or constantly scan for what might go wrong, your brain can start treating those things as especially important.
So you notice more and more and more of them.
It’s kind of like a Pavlovian response.
If your cat knows that knocking over your glass of water gets your attention, and every time your cat knocks over the glass you react, you’re unconsciously training your cat to keep knocking over the water.
Even if the attention isn’t positive.
Your brain learns from repetition too.
But you and I both know that trying to force positive thinking doesn’t really work.
Somehow your brain just kind of drifts back to the old thoughts anyway, right?
It’s almost like once the train starts moving, it’s really hard to stop that train.
You can sit there and try to tell yourself positive affirmations all day, but if a part of you doesn’t really believe them, your brain keeps drifting back to what it already knows.
We can’t force new thoughts to appear.
But we can train your brain to filter out some of the stuff that’s been clogging up your mental resources so that more positive, optimistic, natural expectations for good outcomes can arise naturally.
You ever notice how throughout the day you get those annoying phone calls from numbers you don’t know and your phone says SPAM RISK?
So you just ignore the call.
You don’t really think that much about it.
What if you could train your brain to do the same thing with negative thoughts?
What if you could “install” a spam filter for the thoughts that were holding you back, keeping you in place, keeping you ruminating on the same old things, so that your energy is no longer tied up in all of that?
What if your brain could stop automatically delivering every negative thought straight to your conscious attention?
Maybe the thought arises.
Maybe you have the thought.
But instead of grabbing onto it, analyzing it, fighting with it, or letting it hijack the rest of your day, you just ignore it.
Like a spam call.
Remember when I mentioned the reticular activating system?
Hypnosis is a process of retraining your brain away from the stuff that you don’t want and onto the stuff that you do.
This means that instead of focusing on every negative thought that comes up, you can begin automatically retraining your focus away from that and back onto your everyday, present-focused life.
Hypnosis helps you get underneath some of those automatic patterns of thinking and teach your brain something new.
So instead of getting the same sh*tty song stuck in your head over and over again, you can start getting a better metaphorical song stuck in your head.
You’re mentally rehearsing something new so that your brain can begin to go:
"Oh. This is what we’re doing now."
And over time, you begin changing what your brain treats as important, what it pays attention to, and what it can simply let pass by.
If you’d rather experience this than just read about it, I created a free hypnosis specifically for helping you stop getting pulled into negative thought patterns...
When you use my free hypnosis, you may notice some slight shifts right away.
You’re going to get the best results by using it repeatedly.
And the more you use it, the less you need it.
It’s just 13 minutes long and is designed to help you start taking back control of those negative thought patterns.
And in just 13 minutes, you may notice that you feel at least a little bit more in control of where your mind goes next.
That’s the beginning.
If you’d like to dive deeper and have a more customized experience, I also offer custom hypnosis recordings starting at just $39.
We can work with the specific thoughts or feelings that keep showing up for you and start programming in the thoughts, responses, and patterns that you’d rather be experiencing.
You can use your recording anytime, anywhere.
Just pop on some headphones, press play, and let me talk to the part of your brain that actually needs to hear it.

I teach you how to work WITH your mind, not against it.
If you’re tired of repeating the same loop while quietly wondering, “Why is it so hard to change?” you’re in the right place.
You’re not broken. You’ve just been using the wrong tool.
I’m Jessi, board-certified hypnotist and cat whisperer in my off hours.
I help people finally change the patterns that have kept them stuck for years - without white-knuckling their way through it.
